The Directorate-General for Education and Science Statistics (DGEEC) has released indicators from the 2023 Survey on the Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Municipal Councils (IUTICCM). The data shows that 69.2% of Portuguese local authorities are using interconnected technological systems to address urban and environmental challenges across various sectors:
Among the solutions implemented in different areas, the following stood out:
- the management of public lighting (39%);
- the installation of charging points for electric vehicles (38%);
- the installation of smart meters (37%); and
- investment in urban mobility management systems (21%).
Despite the progress made, challenges such as a lack of human resources with digital skills (63.6%) and insufficient funding (61.4%) continue to limit progress in some regions.
