Porto is among the 20 European cities recently awarded the European Union’s Smart and Climate-Neutral Cities Mission Label, which recognises efforts to achieve climate neutrality by 2030.
The certificate was presented on 22 October at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. This label, besides acknowledging good climate practices, provides access to public and private funding to support municipalities in their climate transition.
At the ceremony, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education, and Youth, Iliana Ivanova, congratulated the 20 cities that set an example by making them “more liveable and sustainable” and helping Europe become “more competitive in the global race for clean technologies.”

The label recognises that the cities have successfully developed their “Climate City Contract”, where they outlined their actions and investment plans towards climate neutrality. This process involved co-creation with various local stakeholders, including the private sector and citizens, promoting joint action to meet climate goals.
In addition to Porto, the Cities Mission Label was also awarded to 19 other European cities: Aachen and Münster (Germany); Trikala (Greece); Miskolc (Hungary); Eilat (Israel); Bologna, Bergamo, Milan, Prato, and Turin (Italy); Liepāja (Latvia); The Hague (Netherlands); Bucharest and Suceava (Romania); Ljubljana and Kranj (Slovenia); and Gothenburg, Gävle, and Umeå (Sweden).
This group joins the 43 cities already recognised in previous rounds, including Lisbon and Guimarães in March 2024.
