The United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP29, commenced this Monday in Baku, Azerbaijan. COP29 gathers leaders from over 190 countries under the theme “Solidarity for a Green World,” aiming to intensify international cooperation to combat the climate crisis and accelerate the energy transition.
Key Priorities of COP29
With a clear focus on climate finance, the EU’s objectives seek to strengthen global cooperation and ambition to tackle the climate crisis. These are:
- New Global Climate Finance Goal — Establishing a global commitment to provide public and private funds to support developing countries in their climate actions.
- International Carbon Markets — Concluding Article 6 negotiations of the Paris Agreement to create a robust and transparent global carbon market.
- Implementation of Commitments for the Energy Transition — Following up on COP28 agreements to accelerate the transition to clean energy, with a call for more ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by 2025.
- Global Adaptation and Resilience — Strengthening climate adaptation policies and global resilience to climate change, particularly in the most vulnerable regions.
Cities for Climate hopes that COP29 will be a pivotal moment to drive international cooperation and climate ambition, setting a clear path for the coming years and charting a course towards a more sustainable future.
