On 28 November 2024, the city of Tomar hosted the first in-person working session of the Carbon Removal Working Group, part of the Cities for Climate Network. The session brought together the Technical Secretariat team and technical teams from seven of the member municipalities that make up the group. Councillor Hélder Henriques of the Tomar City Council welcomed the participants and opened the session by contextualising the municipality’s climate action efforts and highlighting their importance to the region.
The morning’s activities focused on presenting and discussing a multi-criteria analysis methodology applied to carbon dioxide removal strategies. Participants also worked to identify nature-based and technological solutions for the durable removal of CO₂ and began exploring environmental, social, and techno-economic indicators to evaluate and prioritise these strategies.
In the afternoon, attendees were invited to visit the Flecheiro intervention area in Tomar. The municipal team provided a detailed presentation of the initiatives undertaken and led a guided tour of the site. This activity offered an opportunity to explore exemplary practices in sustainability and innovative urban planning.
The Working Group is set to reconvene in early 2025 at a location yet to be announced, continuing its efforts to define carbon dioxide removal strategies to be integrated into the climate action plans of the participating municipalities.
