Innovation in Energy

In the latest episode of the “ADN da Energia” podcast by Observador, Paulo Ferrão explores the transformation of this sector and how consumers are becoming key players in the energy transition. This revolution, driven by technological and regulatory innovations, promotes the democratization of energy, allowing individuals and communities to produce, consume, store, and share electricity in an efficient and sustainable way.

The role of the consumer

In the past, consumers were merely passive recipients of energy, produced in a centralized and mostly inefficient manner. Today, electricity generation from renewable sources such as solar and wind energy places consumers at the center of the system. By acquiring photovoltaic systems, for example, they become both consumers and producers, contributing to reducing their electricity bills. In a sustainable way, Renewable Energy Communities are beginning to emerge, where citizens, within a radius of up to 2 km, can share energy, buying and selling among themselves through bidirectional smart grids.

Innovations shaping the future

The flexibility that may be offered by Energy Communities will certainly be a strategic solution in the future to address the variability of renewable sources, transforming neighborhoods into “batteries” capable of supporting the power grid in times of high demand.

Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT) are redefining the future of the sector. It is expected that energy management systems will be able to anticipate consumption patterns and model them in response to market signals, reducing costs and contributing to the balance of the electrical system.

New opportunities and sustainability

The energy transition not only reduces the carbon footprint but also paves the way for new business models and the creation of skilled jobs. This scenario drives the emergence of startups offering products and services that promote more efficient use of resources and facilitate citizen engagement.

To achieve climate neutrality by 2030, it is essential to intensify innovation, strengthen regulation, and promote cooperation between consumers, businesses, and governments.
