On March 5, Women in Solidarity for Energy (WISE) will host the largest multilingual online event ever held in Europe on energy poverty, women, and the right to energy—the Pan-European Conference, under the theme: “Translating Women’s Right to Energy Across Europe.”
This event marks the conclusion of the “28 Days of Language Solidarity” campaign, launched after WISE identified language as a significant barrier for many women experiencing energy vulnerability in the European Union. On one hand, the technical language of the energy sector makes it difficult to understand electricity and gas bills or communicate with suppliers. On the other hand, migrant women face additional challenges due to the lack of information available in their native languages.
To tackle this issue, WISE created the Translate-A-Thon initiative and the “28 Days of Language Solidarity” campaign, mobilizing energy professionals, translators, students, and volunteers to translate content on energy rights and practical energy-saving tips. The goal is to ensure clear and accessible information for women about their right to energy and how to reduce consumption.
During the Pan-European Conference, WISE will present the main findings of the Translate-A-Thon and facilitate a European-wide discussion on how best to translate women’s right to energy within the framework of the European Pillar of Social Rights, adapting it to local and national policies with a gender-sensitive approach.
The two-hour interactive event will feature 25 parallel sessions in different languages.
Discussion topics include gender and a just energy transition; energy poverty among migrant and minority women; students and young women in energy vulnerability; elderly women and access to energy; solid fuel use by women in the Global North and South; inclusive energy education, among others.
