Guimarães Invests €206,000 in the Decarbonization of Bairro C

The Citizens’ Assembly of Bairro C: Zero Carbon Commitment has concluded the selection of four priority projects aimed at reducing the area’s carbon footprint. The initiative, promoted by the Municipality of Guimarães, foresees a total investment of €206,000 in measures focused on energy and the circular economy

Sustainable energy for the community

The largest portion of the investment, €150,000, will be allocated to the creation of the Sustainability Hub, a support center for energy efficiency and the circular economy. Additionally, a photovoltaic power station will be installed on municipal buildings, with surplus energy benefiting social housing, promoting equitable access to clean energy.

Circular economy and recycling incentives

With an investment of €56,000, Bairro C will feature a space called “I Learn and RRRCycle”, dedicated to repair and upcycling workshops, encouraging the reuse of materials. To reinforce recycling habits, 10 smart recycling bins with a rewards system will be installed, incentivizing residents to adopt more sustainable behaviors.

A model for urban sustainability

The initiatives were selected during the final session of the Citizens’ Assembly, held at the Fraterna auditorium, where participants defined priorities to transform Bairro C into a model for urban sustainability.

What is Bairro C?

Bairro C: Zero Carbon Commitment is a pilot project for social innovation and climate action promoted by the Municipality of Guimarães, aiming to become a model of urban sustainability. Involving citizens, universities, and cultural organizations, Bairro C is committed to carbon neutrality, with actions in areas such as energy, mobility, waste, and land use.

Located between Couros, Caldeiroa, and Avenida Conde Margaride, the project integrates strategies of innovation, culture, and citizen participation to reduce carbon emissions. A key component of the project is a Climate Pact, engaging the community in implementing measures such as energy efficiency, circular economy, and promotion of public transport.

Bairro C is part of the Guimarães 2030 strategy and the European NetZeroCities program, standing out as one of the top 10 urban best practices in Europe, recognized by the European Heritage Platform. This distinction reinforces the city’s commitment to the triple transformation – environmental, social, and cultural – consolidating Guimarães as a leading example in the fight against climate change.
