The Cities for Climate Network is a collaborative initiative, without legal personality, with the mission to support Portuguese cities and regions in their effort to accelerate the transition to climate neutrality, in alignment with the European Mission “The 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030, by and for the citizens”.

The Cities for Climate Network was founded by Portuguese cities and regions that expressed their interest in integrating the Mission and, thus, the ambition to develop a “Climate City-Contract”, incorporating a strategy and an action plan for climate neutrality by 2030.

Any Portuguese city and region committed to the objective of climate neutrality can join the Cities for Climate Network.

The activities of the Cities for Climate Network are promoted and managed by the Technical Secretariat, assigned to IN+ Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research.

The Environmental Fund finances the establishment and operationalization of the Cities for Climate Network.

About the Mission “100 climate-neutral and smart cities in Europe by 2030, by and for the citizens”

Recognizing the importance of cities in achieving the goal of climate neutrality, the Mission is an initiative of the European Commission and the European Parliament that aims to encourage 100 European cities to be climate neutral by 2030.

These cities act as centers of experimentation and innovation that will serve as an example for other European cities to promote climate neutrality until 2050.

This Mission aims to support the transformation of these cities to accelerate compliance with the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda, simultaneously becoming a catalyst for the European Green Deal and a demonstrator that climate neutrality is possible before 2050.

There were 20 Portuguese cities and regions that applied to the European Mission, with Guimarães, Lisboa and Porto being selected.

The cities of Braga, Fundão, Matosinhos and Torres Vedras later joined the Twinning Learning Programme promoted by the Net Zero Cities project.
